River Cruises and Waterway Itineraries in Padua and Its Province

Discover our region from a unique perspective! In this article, we suggest some of the most fascinating boat excursions along the waterways of the Euganean Riviera, Padua, and the Brenta Riviera.

In the area of Padua and its province, travelling by gondolas, sandoli, burci, and mascarete was once extremely common. These traditional boats navigated the inland canals, transporting people and goods between bridges and magnificent historic residences. Waterways were the preferred means of transportation, as river travel was often more convenient and safer than roads, which could become impassable due to rain, frost, or banditry.

Today, just as in the past, the network of navigable canals offers the opportunity to rediscover the artistic, historical, and natural treasures of the City of Saint Anthony and its surrounding area, while enjoying the gentle pace of life on the water.

Local navigation companies offer a wide range of daytime and evening cruises, allowing visitors to admire the landscape from an original and evocative point of view.

River tourism in Padua is centred around seven main waterways: the Brenta River, the Piovego Canal, the Bacchiglione River, the Battaglia Canal, the Bisato Canal, the Pontelongo Canal, and the Brentella Canal. These routes provide stunning views of the magnificent Venetian Villas and some of the region’s most authentic landscapes.

One of the most famous experiences is the boat journey from Padua to Venice along the Brenta Canal (Naviglio del Brenta), following the route once travelled by the elegant burchielli boats of the 18th century. Today, the Burchiello—a modern tourist cruise service—recreates this historic voyage, passing through locks and swing bridges before reaching St. Mark’s Square. During the mini-cruise, expert guides accompany passengers on a journey through the history of the magnificent Venetian Villas, with stops for guided tours of residences associated with renowned figures such as Palladio and Tiepolo. Alongside the Burchiello, several other vessels—both modern boats and traditional wooden crafts—continue to preserve the romantic charm of historic river navigation.

Equally enchanting is the cruise from Padua to Monselice along the Battaglia Canal, skirting the Euganean Hills Regional Park. This ancient route winds through villas, castles, and rolling landscapes beloved by Francesco Petrarch, who found inspiration here while travelling to his retreat in Arquà Petrarca.

Another delightful experience is navigating the canals of Padua’s historic centre, passing ancient Renaissance walls and green waterside scenery that reveal a completely different side of the city.

Finally, the route from Pontelongo to the Venetian Lagoon follows the historic Salt Route, crossing reclaimed countryside and the Southern Lagoon before reaching Venice and Chioggia. Along the way, travellers can enjoy unique views where land and water blend into a truly unforgettable landscape.
